For Monroe County:
Green Tip of the Week: Current NYS law requires that major food users (eg colleges, hotels, restaurants, grocery stores) must recycle food scraps if there is a food scrap recycling facility within 25 miles. Currently there isn't one, meaning that a lot of organics are going to landfills to be degraded into methane, a potent greenhouse gas. To take action, contact your county legislature and also sign the petition at: https://www.colorfairportgreen.org/aboutcompostpetition.
For the rest of NYS:
Green Tip of the Week: 40% of food in the US goes uneaten. Current NYS law requires that major food users (eg colleges, hotels, restaurants, grocery stores) must recycle food scraps if there is a food scrap recycling facility within 25 miles. Find out if there is one near you, and if not, urge your county legislature to create one.
For outside of NYS:
Green Tip of the Week: 40% of food in the US goes uneaten. In states where there are no laws governing food waste, a lot of organics are going to landfills to be degraded into methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Some states require major food users (eg colleges, hotels, restaurants, grocery stores) to recycle food scraps. Find out what the laws are in your state and urge your county legislature to create sufficient composting facilities.
